Academic Capital Group Inc.
Background
Originally a subsidiary of Sallie Mae Inc., Academic Capital got its start in educational loans in 1996. Several years, and several changes of ownership later, the present day Academic Capital Group, Inc., composed of four operating divisions: Academic Capital Government Finance, Academic Capital Commercial Leasing & Finance, Academic Capital Partners and Academic Capital Services, was formed. Their services range from municipal lease financing for the government and the energy services industry, to serving the corporate market by providing financing to capital equipment vendors that sell equipment to small and medium size businesses, as well as large corporations.

Services Provided
A relative newcomer to the industry, Academic Capital was looking to break into the market in Hawaii. PMCI was retained to develop brand awareness with the general public and the government. With PMCI’s help, Academic Capital was established in Hawaii with the Hawaii Health System Corporation (HHSC) as one of their major clients. During the years of fiscal restraint and the Cayetano administration, many other finance companies exited the Hawaii market because of disadvantageous leasing rules. Seeing this as an opportunity to help re-structure the market, PMCI and Academic Capital worked with the government to craft an acceptable financing agreement for government departments, making it beneficial and cost-effective for all parties involved. As a result, Academic Capital was able to increase its market share by establishing a working relationship with the University of Hawaii.
